Sam White: Breaking the Rules and Rewriting Them for Good

When Sam White founded Stella Insurance, she didn’t just want to sell policies, she wanted to rewrite an entire industry.

Insurance, she says, has always been “built by men, for men.” Her mission? To change that and build a business that speaks to women’s lives, needs and realities.

Sam is one of those rare leaders who can see both the system and the gaps within it. A straight-talking northern entrepreneur, she’s spent her career proving that business doesn’t have to be soulless to be successful.

And she’s done it on her own terms, with humour, heart, and a refusal to play by the old rules.

The Early Hustle

Sam launched her first company at 24, armed with ambition, a second-hand desk, and a clear sense that she wasn’t going to fit the mould.

In the late 1990s, the insurance sector was overwhelmingly male, and not just at boardroom level. “You could feel it the moment you walked into a meeting,” she said. “It wasn’t built for women, either as leaders or as customers.”

She started Freedom Services Group, her first venture, because she wanted to create a company where integrity mattered as much as profit. It began small, a few clients, long hours, a lot of grit, and grew into a multimillion-pound operation employing hundreds of people.

Over the years, she’s founded and scaled multiple businesses, all built on the same foundation: empathy, inclusion, and purpose-led profit.

The Birth of Stella; Insurance with Intention

By 2020, Sam was ready to challenge the system on a bigger stage. From Sydney, she launched Stella Insurance, a brand created for women, by women, with an unapologetic mission to do things differently.

She didn’t just slap a pink logo on a product and call it “female-focused.” She asked hard questions:

  • Why are car insurance premiums often higher for women?
  • Why is there no policy support for women leaving abusive relationships?
  • Why don’t insurers talk about the realities women face; safety, equality, parenthood, empowerment?

The result was Stella, an insurance brand that genuinely reflects women’s lives. Every element of the business was designed to be inclusive, transparent and empowering. Even the claims process was reimagined to be kinder and less intimidating.

One of Stella’s most innovative moves was the creation of a domestic abuse support policy, offering financial assistance and flexibility to women escaping unsafe situations. For Sam, this wasn’t about publicity. It was personal. “We’re not just here to sell policies, we’re here to make a difference,” she said.

From the UK to Australia, and Back Again

Stella launched first in Australia, quickly gaining national attention for its purpose-driven approach and fresh brand voice. Its marketing campaigns didn’t shy away from being bold. One tagline simply read “Insurance made for women, not made up for women.”

It resonated instantly. Women saw a brand that understood them, and men saw one that was shaking up a stale industry. In 2022, Sam brought Stella back to the UK, closing the circle between her northern roots and her global vision.

Under her leadership, Stella expanded into new markets, partnered with women-led organisations, and invested in community initiatives, from supporting the Women’s and Girls’ Emergency Centre (WAGEC) in Australia to collaborating with female-founded brands that champion empowerment and equality.

Knowing When to Step Aside

Perhaps one of the most powerful decisions in Sam’s story wasn’t about what she did, but what she didn’t do.

At the height of Stella’s success, she made the choice to step aside as CEO. Not because she was done, but because she knew the business was ready for a different kind of leadership. It was a move that raised eyebrows in an industry obsessed with titles, but for Sam, it was a masterclass in self-awareness.

“I don’t need to be CEO to make an impact,” she said. “The business doesn’t define me, it’s part of me. My role is to keep it moving forward, not to sit in the biggest chair.”

That decision cemented her reputation as a leader with both vision and humility, proof that stepping back can be just as powerful as stepping up.

Leading with Purpose, and Personality

Sam’s leadership style is equal parts strategic and sincere. She runs her companies with empathy, encourages flexibility for parents and caregivers, and creates space for real conversations about mental health, inclusion and identity.

Openly gay, she’s spoken candidly about the importance of representation, authenticity and love; in life and leadership. Her relationship, her family, and her values aren’t side notes; they’re part of her whole story.

For Sam, being in a same-sex relationship isn’t something to hide or highlight, it’s simply part of who she is. “I don’t lead as a woman, or as a gay woman, or as a founder,” she said. “I lead as myself. And that’s enough.”

Community and Collaboration

From the beginning, Stella has put community at the heart of its operations. The company regularly donates to domestic abuse charities, supports female founders, and runs social campaigns that raise awareness about women’s safety and equality.

One standout initiative was Stella’s collaboration with WAGEC, not just fundraising, but embedding long-term partnerships into the company’s DNA. Stella also works with Our Watch, an organisation dedicated to preventing violence against women and their children.

Every policy, campaign and partnership ties back to Sam’s founding principle: do business that makes life better.

Why She Inspires Us

Sam White is a rebel with a remarkable purpose. She’s proof that you don’t have to fit the mould to make it, you can melt it down and make something entirely new.

Her story is one of courage, creativity and community. She’s redefined what power looks like in a male-dominated field, shown that leadership doesn’t need a title, and reminded every woman that there’s strength in doing things your way.

For women building businesses, leading teams, or fighting to be heard, Sam’s example is simple but radical: authenticity is your edge.
